  • CAR INSURANCE

While it is fairly easy to compare prices for many goods and services, such is not the case for car insurance. Prices for car insurance premiums are quoted on a case-by-case basis as they are influenced by a matrix of the following risk factors:

The cheapest premium is between 30-65 age range. For those under 30 and above 65 will have to pay a higher premium.

As women are generally considered to be more careful drivers, they are charged a lower premium.

Married couples are considered more responsible drivers and can sometimes get cheaper premiums.

An “indoors” job in an office can get you cheaper premiums. Outdoor or sales-driven jobs suggest heavy car usage, therefore costlier to insure.

The longer you have been driving (ideally 4 years or more), premium gets cheaper.

The fewer car insurance claims made in the past, the cheaper the premium.

For every year that you have driven and did not have to make a claim, you get a 10% discount. You can accumulate your No Claim Discount (NCD) up to 50% off, i.e. after 5 claim-free years.

If you did not get any demerit points in the past 3 years, you can get a 5% discount off your car insurance (after deducting NCD) from selected insurers.

The more basic the car, the cheaper the premium. You have to pay more to insure continental cars, luxury cars and SUVs as their parts are more costly to replace. Also, the higher the engine capacity, the more expensive the premium.

The older the car, the cheaper the premium up to about 10 years old. Subsequently, premiums will go up as your car starts disintegrating.

The less you drive (e.g. only on weekends or commuting to work), the cheaper the premium. Off-peak drivers usually get cheaper premiums as the likelihood of accidents is much lower then.

Why it is worth paying more on car insurance premium to choose your own workshop?

When you got into an accident and need to get your car repaired, insurance companies tend to prefer that you use one of their authorised workshops for repairs to cut down on their costs, so they will often give you a cheaper premium if you agree to use these authorised workshops when making a claim. Though you should be careful to ensure that the quality of the service you receive at these workshops is up to your standards, this can be a great way to help minimise the amount you pay on car insurance. However, there are circumstances in which you may prefer to pay a little extra on your premium for the ability to get your car repaired at a workshop of your choice.

If your car still under warranty

You need to validate that insurance company’s approved workshops are competent to restore your car without jeopardising your warranty validity as not all workshops are equipped with the correct brand-specified tools, apply correct repair techniques or insisting on using genuine spare parts. You are much better off paying a slightly higher premium to be bale to bring your car for repairs at the authorise dealer or specialised workshop of your choice.

If you have a premium or luxury continental car

If you have a premium or luxury continental or less common car, you should consider paying a higher premium to be able to get your car repaired at a workshop of your choice. This is because the insurance company’s authorised workshops may not have the necessary competency to repair your car and you may risk having a situation where your car is stuck at the workshop for an extended length of time.

If you a specialised workshop you know and trust

Some customers may already have a specialised car workshop whose work they trust. If you are the kind of person for whom peace of mind is priceless, you should opt for the flexible workshop or any workshops options to ensure your car repaired wherever you want.
